I've been researching various telephony solutions for legacy PBX integration, and I keep coming across the term FXO Gateway. I understand it's related to analog lines and VoIP, but I want to dive deeper into what exactly it does, where it fits into a network, and why businesses even consider using it in 2025, especially when most companies are shifting to fully IP-based systems.

From what I’ve gathered:

  • FXO stands for Foreign Exchange Office.

  • It’s a type of gateway that connects analog telephone lines (POTS or PSTN) to IP-based phone systems.

  • The gateway has FXO ports that connect to FXS ports of a PBX or directly to the PSTN lines.

This makes me wonder:

  1. Is it still relevant in hybrid environments, or is it just a temporary solution until full IP migration?

  2. How does it compare to FXS gateways in terms of deployment?

  3. What role do FXO gateways play in failover or disaster recovery setups?

  4. Is there a difference in performance when using a 4-port vs 8-port or 16-port FXO gateway?

Also, are there any specific technical considerations when choosing one (like codec support, SIP trunk compatibility, etc.)?

I'd love to hear from IT admins or telecom professionals here who have worked with FXO Gateways—what’s your use case, and how did it fit into your network setup?
